Pre/Post Gender-Confirming Top Surgery
Possible complications can occur after FTM/NB top surgery. There are many factors that determine the healing and appearance of surgery incision scars such as sun exposure, range of motion post-op, age, lifestyle (diet, smoking etc) and genetics. It is important to note that the final appearance of your incision lines/scar may not fully reveal itself entirely until about 12-18 months post surgery. Return to pre surgical movement may take even longer.
Massage Therapy for the support of ROM and scar mobility
Massage has applications both pre and post operatively. Ensuring you have full range of motion and tissues are mobile prior to surgery will benefit you in the long run.
Scar formation is a natural part of the healing process and starts to form as soon as the incision is surgically closed. It can adhere to the underlying fascial tissue, causing a feeling of tightness in the surrounding skin. Movement may become restricted or you may just move less because of the discomfort. Making the scar tissue soft and supple minimizes its appearance and allows you to maintain mobility, aiding in your overall recovery.
Preoperatively, massage therapy can ensure range of motion in surrounding joints is free of restriction due to hypertonicity or fascial restriction. Healthy tissues respond better post surgically.
RMTs at Ethos have advanced training in massage considerations for post surgical breast/chest scars, which can make the scar less visible, release skin tension, and increase mobility of the affected area.
Ongoing education, and safe, trauma informed care are our promise to you.
